Description
In June 1950, the Korean War called St. Norbert students, graduates and the professor of military science and tactics (PMS&T) to combat. The small size of the regular army at the time necessitated the activation of many reserve component units. As was and remains the situation, many St. Norbert College students were members of these units.
The exact number who served in Korea cannot be determined but a very conservative estimate from a 1951 graduate states "at least 50% of the of the graduating classes of 1948, 1949, 1950, 1951, 1952 and 1953 served in Korea. Colonel (Ret.) Steve Donarski states that "it was hard to tell how many actually served because they went over, got wounded and were sent home so quickly we couldn't keep count."
Steven Donarski graduated from Central Catholic High School with the class of 1947. In his senior year, he commanded the school ROTC unit.
He then went on to attend St. Norbert College and graduated in 1951 with a degree in history and political science. While there he also commanded the ROTC college unit. Steven was the first cadet ever from St. Norbert College to receive the Regular Distinguished Army Commission.
He was commissioned in the regular Army as a Second Lieutenant of Infantry and proudly served his country for the next 35 years in the regular and reserved forces of the U.S. Army. In the Korean War he commanded an Infantry Rifle Company with the 7th Infantry (Bayonet Division). He was wounded in action on February 7, 1953.
Colonel Donarski commanded Company A 17th Infantry in Korea, 634th OM Company in Sturgeon Bay, 1080th Transportation Company of Green Bay, 380 QM Company in Green Bay, 432nd Civil Affairs Battalion of Green Bay, 5045 U.S.A.R. School in Madison, and the 633rd Support Group in Madison. He was a graduate of The Industrial College of the Armed Forces and The U.S. Command and General Staff College.
Throughout his military career Colonel Donarski earned many awards including, The Combat InfantryMans Badge, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Meritorious Service, Army Commendation, Army Achievement, Presidential Citation, and R.O.K. Presidential Citation.
Colonel Steven F. Donarski passed away Sunday, March 27, 2011.
