Biographical Text

Brigadier General John C. Hanley is currently the Commander, 3rd Battle Command Training Brigade, 75th Battle Command Training Division, Fort Sheridan, Illinois. Prior to this assignment, he served as the Deputy Commanding General, 88th Regional Support Command, Fort McCoy, Wisconsin.

BG Hanley began his military career as a Reserve Officers’ Training Corps Distinguished Military Graduate and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Field Artillery immediately following graduation from St. Norbert College, De Pere, Wisconsin.

He served in the Regular Army with two assignments with the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), including service during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm as the 101st Aviation Brigade Fire Support Officer. He also served in the Federal Republic of Germany as Pershing Missile Platoon Leader in the 56th Field Artillery Brigade and as a Battery Commander in the 41st Field Artillery Brigade. Prior to leaving active duty, he was assigned as an Assistant Professor of Military Science at Georgetown University in Washington, DC.

After serving on active duty, BG Hanley entered the Army Reserve and was assigned to the 84th Division (Training) where he served in the 2nd Brigade (Basic Combat Training) as a Battalion S3, Battalion Executive Officer and Brigade S3. From 1996 to 1999, he served as Commander, 3rd Battalion, 334th Regiment in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. After this command assignment, he was assigned as the Assistant Deputy Chief of Staff for Personnel, 84th Division (Institutional Training), and then subsequently assigned as the Executive Officer, 6th Brigade (Professional Development), 84th Division (Institutional Training). In October 2002, he was assigned to the 1st Brigade (Battle Command Staff Training), 85th Division (Training Support) as Commander, 1st Simulation Exercise Group. Before he was selected for general officer, he served as Chief of Staff, 88th Regional Readiness Command, Fort Snelling, Minnesota from August 2005 through January 2008.

He completed the Field Artillery Basic Course, the Field Artillery and Infantry Officer Advanced Courses, the Combined Arms and Services Staff School, the Army Management Staff College, U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, and the U.S. Army War College.

BG Hanley’s decorations include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with three oak leaf clusters, Army Commendation Medal with a silver oak leaf cluster, Parachutist Badge and the Air Assault Badge. He holds a Master of Public Administration Degree from Troy State University and a Masters of Strategic Studies from the United States Army War College.
